About This Project

With support from an IMLS National Leadership grant, the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will work in partnership with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Massachusetts State Archives to develop a model statewide disaster plan and disseminate it to state libraries and state archives across the United States.

The model plan will provide a blueprint for preparing in advance for area-wide disasters building alliances with federal, state, and local emergency management agencies, and coordination between different types of cultural institutions. The draft model will be based on the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ plan for public libraries in Massachusetts.

In developing a model statewide plan that incorporates lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, NEDCC plans to investigate state-wide disaster response plans currently in place. If you have a working disaster plan for your state, or are writing one, we invite you to share these documents with the project team. Please contact Aimée Primeaux, project manager.

The Northeast Document Conservation Center, located in Andover, Massachusetts, is one of the largest nonprofit, regional conservation centers in the United States, specializing in preservation of paper-based materials for libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions. Working in conjunction with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, NEDCC recently produced an online disaster planning tool, dPlan™, which can be accessed at no cost at: www.dplan.org.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries, 17,500 museums. IMLS National Leadership Grants help libraries and museums advance learning, build digital resources, and conduct research and demonstration projects, such as NEDCC’s. They support national models exemplifying partnerships and collaborations among libraries, museums, and other institutions to build on educational resources with lasting impact on the community. www.imls.gov.
